Swap the Y of the town's name with W, and you have the call sign. It's a sturdy name, even though it does carry connotations of duty and toil.
It's WOYK now, which makes it sound like it should be a New Jersey station. They dropped WORK in 1973 for . . . are you ready? WZIX.
That lasted eight years, and then it was back to WOYK, so to speak. The PD tells the story on a radio message board, here.
