When it opened in 1962, the Downtowner proudly claimed to be the "area's most modern facility for business meetings and conventions." A news story from the time touted the 230-room motel's "porcelain panels of turquoise blue and light red" and its underground parking, "direct-dial telephones," free ice and heated, "boomerang-shaped" outdoor pool.

It closed in 15 years, because motels didn't belong downtown. They all closed.
