The Patron Saint of this site, maybe. The American of Newport had few attributes – “All rooms on ground floor with free parking in front of door,” as the back of the card notes, seems to be a bit of lily-gilding. But then there’s this: “TV, Room phones, music, air conditioned.”

Music! What sort and how it’s provided, they don’t say. It’s just there.

It certainly is colorful. Howard-Johnson colorful. Not that the American was copying Howard Johnson, of course. Hojo had a pointy office with orange and blue-turquoise color scheme and strits that ended in concrete boxes sunk in the earth, and the American had -
